Harvey:

I am looking for information regarding the following:

I would like to gauge the industry interest in a device capable of detecting:

1.  Separations in the tread and/or body ply sections

2.  Differentiating between good and bad patches

3. Damaged steel belts

These can be measured in various ways.  A display could show the status of a small area with a number or with a video display.  Another area to address is whether the measurements will be made with or without the tire mounted on the rim.  The difference will be cost, size and weight as well as battery life for a handheld unit.  For a fixed mounted unit a lot of these concerns will go away.

Handheld case:

This would need to be portable and understanding the needs of the user is paramount.  Knowing whether passenger, commercial, industrial and even off the road mining application tires would be candidate applications and what the price point would be is important.  Spot size for scan as well as minimum discernible fault size is important to properly design the unit.

Fixed Mounted case:

This unit would allow for more flexibility in operation.  However, cost vs. capability also needs to be properly addressed.  For various size tires it is important to understand how many sensor arrays may be required to cover the types of tires that will be measured by any given user.  Also understanding whether emphasis would be placed on the crown, shoulder or sidewall or bead or any combination of these areas helps in avoiding overkill in design of the unit.  

We are basically looking for capabilities desired and how much people would be willing to pay for these capabilities.
