Last September we sent an RTA memo to all RTA members and selected others regarding Buzz Outs and Skives. A copy of the important part of fthe memo is shown below:

Dear reader,

One of our good RTA members asked us for our help with an interesting question today. He wanted to know the maximum number of buzz outs/skives allowed when retreading a tire.

Although we do have a small file on this subject I thought it would be a good idea to ask for help from our members and other readers of this memo. Specifically, we want to know the following.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER ALLOWED BY YOUR COMPANY?

Today we received the following email from an RTA member with his input. We thought you would like to see it. It has been slightly edited to remove his name and his company name.

It seems one of the biggest hold ups in our plant is at the skive stations. When you do your skiving properly, which we do, you can have 2 or 3 minutes in some of the deeper skive outs. I start crying if we average more the 2 skive outs per tire but have done as many as 10 in some casings. All of our customers' tires run over the road so I am sure other retreaders would laugh at me for that comment.  At some point we will either charge customers more that send us casings with excessive skives/buzz outs or choose not to business with them.
