We'd like your feedback on a new product that is beneficial to OTR Haul Truck Tires

Al Atkinson is at the TIA OTR Conference today in Hawaii.

We received a very interesting inquiry from Al Atkinson at Pewag Inc. about a new product for OTR tires. Pewag has a new OTR Flank Protection Chain product for haul trucks. After a year of successful initial testing, they are installing the Flank Protection Chains on their haul trucks.

We are seeking YOUR FEEDBACK on this product and the questions raised by Al.

Your expertise is invaluable and we welcome all responses. Al is seeking any info and feedback he can get, about care and life-span of retreadable haul tires.

Good Afternoon Harvey & Jeffrey,
It seems 2017 is starting off pretty good for all of us in the industry.
 
For our company, the only exposure we had to the retread industry was putting snow/traction chains on retreaded tires, for major fleets.  For the OTR business, my colleagues and I have learned quite a lot about the retreading industry at the annual TIA OTR conferences.
 
In 2016 Pewag introduced a new product for testing on haul trucks. A year later the initial test has been a success and the user is installing the Flank Protection Chains on their other haul trucks. Due to the speed the haul trucks travel, a complete tire protection chain isn't possible, but we can now protect the outer sidewall against damage.
 
Our main question to your members is:
How many times a haul truck tire can be retreaded? I know there are many steps in determining whether a casing should be retreaded, but eliminating sidewall damage should help increase the amount of tires that can be retreaded.

We are also creating a presentation for our website that would outline procedures to get the most out of their haul truck tire investments. 

From what I've learned there are some basic principles that not only maximize a new tire's life, but also help to keep the casing suitable for retreading.

We welcome any info or additions that you have encountered.

• Proper air pressure inside the tire: Continually Under or Over inflating a tire reduces a casings useful life. If you can get 20,000+ hours lifetime on a casing, that's like getting one FREE tire?
• Tire Sizing: Using the same size tire and design on the duals, will distribute the workload equally.
• Daily inspections and pressure checks.
