Hello Folks
Please find attached my most recent article as published in the Tyre Trends magazine.

Within the tyre industry retreading is well understood and mostly appreciated. In the general community there are many urban myths perpetuated by those who have little knowledge or others that have little interest.

When I entered the tyre industry decades ago I found it difficult to comprehend that we used just a little of the tyre and then threw the rest away.

An interesting comment from a road safety colleague was that tyres were the starting point of our consumable society, I could not disagree. We have progressed, if it can be called that, to these days when we find our oceans full of plastic, our air laden with "stuff" that makes it hard for us to breath. I remember on a visit to a tyre manufacturing region how the sun, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, was a purple circle in the sky. I was breathing the air and that concerned me.

Retreading is an aspect of the tyre industry that we should promote I feel, we can re-use our resources to minimise the impacts, economically and environmentally. I remember as a younger engineer reviewing a database and finding tyres on road transport that were up to their 7th cap!  Yes, with careful management that is more than feasible.

Now with TPMS we can track pressures to maintain the tyre in the optimum operating envelope.  By doing so we can maximise the benefits at the retreading stage by minimising the reject rate! The aviation industry has been doing exactly this for many years.

Who wants to make more money and reduce their resource use? Anyone got any ideas on how we can educate people to actually appreciate the role that tyres play in our societies?

I always appreciate feedback so don't be afraid to tell me. If I don't know it's not right then I can't remedy it.
