"I write this upon hearing of the death of Harvey, who died of complications from lung cancer on Sept. 17 at the age of 81. With all the technology we have, news, at least bad news, does not always travel fast. He was an industry icon, truly the "Voice of Retreading" for 28 years as managing director of the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau, or TRIB. He was a tireless conference speaker, exhibitor, promoter of retreading and refuter of negative publicity of the retreading industry. He received the American Retreaders Association Industry Leadership Award in 1991, only nine years into his role with TRIB. At his induction into the International Tire & Rubber Association Hall of Fame in 2000, he once again shared a life lesson: "If you find something you love to do, you never have to work a day in your life."

We wish to express our sincere sympathy and condolences to the Brodsky family for the recent passing of Harvey Brodsky. Harvey was the former Managing Director of TRIB and a lifelong supporting advocate to the Retread and Repair Industry. The compassion and energy Harvey gave to defending and bettering the retread industry was always off the chart. Harvey's endless efforts truly helped change the retread industry bringing awareness to the many benefits of retreading and savings to our society. The industry has lost a great friend and remarkable individual. The industry will continue to benefit from his accomplishments and successes for many years to come. "Retreads are the Rodney Dangerfields of the tire industry," Brodsky wrote in one such letter to the editor of Transport Topics in 2011. "They get no respect. And that is a battle we fight every day." Al Cohn of Pressure Systems International Inc. in San Antonio remembers Brodsky as "an unbelievable advocate for the industry" and who was known as much in China and India as he was in the United States and Canada for his efforts to promote acceptance of retreading.

For Harvey Brodsky, promoting tire retreading was like the oxygen he breathed. That kind of commitment not many people have in any industry. RTA is the living example of what he lived for. Now, with Harvey gone, the world of tire retreading is left forlorn. As a person, Harvey always was the epitome of positive energy, optimism and great fun. Everybody knew him as a jovial, kindhearted, honest friend, very methodic in his approach to every issue he faced. I guess that was the reason why he was quite close to the late John Powath, founder and CEO of ABM, and a long time supporter of ABM's publications Tyre Asia and Rubber Asia, and also the conferences that we organised. Harvey was one of the speakers at ATRC 2011. Harvey wrote a touching tribute to John when he died last March and signed it as "Harvey Brodsky, President, John Powath Fans Club.
I always looked up to Harvey and cherish our meetings. I learnt a lot from him. I bow my head to his memories and pray God that his family finds peace in this hour of sadness. ABM wishes the Brodsky family and RTA our prayers and deepest condolences. May God give us strength during these trying times. ABM wishes RTA the very best in its future efforts to support tire retreading. The world ain't going to be the same without him. Our condolences to his family.

At only 5 foot 5 inches tall, he was a giant in the tire and retread industry. For those of us who were fortunate to have known the real Harvey he will be dearly missed. His uniqueness was in his kindness and softness which were by far his strong points. However, when it came to protecting the people and the industry he so dearly loved he became a tiger, fiercely responding to those who made negative comments about retreaded tires. He was well respected not only by the people in the retread industry, but also in the tire industry as a whole. Many of my industry friends from the Tire Industry Association to the U S Tire Manufacturers Association and beyond into the tire retreading and recycling industries, not one person ever had a negative view or word to say about Harvey. As a close friend and his wing-man at the SEMA and trucking conferences over the years. Harvey made sure I was introduced to hundreds of his closest friends, yes they were all close friends. "Brodsky started in the tire industry in the early 1970's. After years with the Lodi Super Mold Co. and Big O Tires, he took over the Tire Retread Information Bureau in 1982. His name quickly became synonymous with retreading.

Harvey was an incredible person and brother in law. I admired Harvey for his kindness to people and to animals. He always cared about other people and their interests and their hobbies. He was able to relate to all different ages. He often sent newspaper articles to me, to my young daughters, from what he found interesting and that they might enjoy reading too. He is to be admired. He often volunteered at organizations, just to do the right thing. I always felt he cared about all the truckers and tire people as his family. He knew these people for 30-40 years, and he always enjoyed hearing about them and their families. He particularly enjoyed going to conventions where he was always a big information source. He was always kind to me personally and always of good cheer. He will be missed by many!!!

I am saddened by the news of Harvey's passing; without a doubt, the "TIRE" industry has lost a true "warrior". Harvey's passion to educate the motoring public about retreads will (in my opinion) never be equaled. Back in my days as a Field Engineer in Michelin's Commercial Truck Product division, I had the very distinct privilege to work with Harvey for two weeks. Our first week (the first time I ever met Harvey in person) of work took us all over my state of residence (Michigan), where we covered the state from top to bottom conducting seminars on many topics associated to tires (manufacturing, application, retreading, etc). I was fortunate in that Harvey rode along with me that entire week, so needless to say, we had plenty of time to get to know one another.
My second week, took me to the Northeast to work with Harvey again in a similar environment. Harvey and I kept in touch via telephone and an occasional e-mail. I took an assignment with Michelin in France for three years, while there, I made contact with Harvey. He asked if I would be interested in writing an article for his "new" association (I left the US in June 2010 so did not know Harvey had started the RTA). After getting the "green light" from mother Michelin, I wrote an article, which Harvey placed on his site. Upon returning to the US in 2013, I made contact with Harvey multiple times, and was always eager to hear that warm and sincere voice coming through the telephone.
Having worked for Michelin for 21 years now, I consider myself very fortunate to have had an opportunity to have met/worked with what I consider to be "one of the most dedicated tire professionals" in the industry. Although I worked with Harvey for a very short period, he left a positive mark on me and helped me to focus my energy in helping to educate technicians/customers on tire matters. Harvey, I know that you will still be "fighting" for our industry… only now from a much better place my FRIEND!!

I actually feel speechless, although like all, I knew it was coming. For Harvey not to be part of our lives is inconceivable.
I met Harvey for the first time 41 years ago, when he was working for a company called Colman in the US, who among other entities owned Stewart Bolling. He was older than me, but less experienced in tire and rubber machinery. He asked me to guide him and what happened was that I found it a rare pleasure to teach him, rather than the other way around. This was the start of a friendship that never stopped and will never end.
Harvey was a perfectionist in anything that concerned conduct, without any false pretention or incorrect behavior in any shape or form. Despite being a person who always to tried to find the golden path, he was totally uncompromising to what he felt was incorrect. It sometimes got him into conflict with people, even close to him, but he always maintained that there is "never the wrong time to do the right thing and never the right time to do the wrong thing".
When he was inducted to the Hall of Fame for the Tire Industry Association, there was no person happier than him. The same when we found out that RTA (his baby) has managed to recruit a sufficient number of members to sustain itself to become the largest trade association for the retread industry. I will always miss Harvey.

I am grieved at this news. Another era has passed. I always loved Harvey. He was always out there on the front lines doing battle for our retread industry. Several times over the years, Harvey stopped at our business, T.P.Tire Service, and while walking through our retread department, he would nod his head, smile and say, "you guys really know how it is done".
