Several years ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hired the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) to conduct a study to determine whether tire debris (also known as rubber on the road or road alligators) posed a safety concern to the motoring public. It was a very thorough and detailed study during which over 86,000 pounds of tire debris was collected from 196 miles of Interstate highways.

The results, after careful analysis of the collected casings and tire fragments by one of the largest and most respected tire forensic expert companies in the world, were that more of the casings came from original tires than from retreads.

The bottom line that can be taken from this very comprehensive study is that the true cause of tire debris on highways anywhere is improper tire maintenance with the main culprit being underinflation, followed closely by overinflation, mismatching of tires on dual wheel positions, bad tire repairs, tires being driven with less than the legal amount of tread remaining and a few other factors.
